A Verdict for Justice is Just the Beginning
This week we witnessed a historic event of racial reckoning for America with Derek Chauvin receiving a guilty verdict on all charges for the murder of George Floyd. The heinous killing of George Floyd highlights the systemic racism Black people in our country face daily from certain members of law enforcement whose vow to serve and protect the citizens of our country did not include people of color. And although the guilty verdict in this case is a victory, it is just the beginning of the justice we expect for Black people and all those who experience racism in the U.S.. Leadership from the University of Washington and UW Medicine shared their thoughts on the George Floyd verdict via email this week. Please read UW President Ana Mari Cauce’s blog post titled: A Verdict for Justice and a Time for Continued Action, and the email from Dr. Paul Ramsey, Dr. Paula Houston and Dr. Bessie Young, titled, Guilty Verdict Brings Accountability for Murder of George Floyd, posted on UW Medicine’s The Huddle.

Celebrating Earth Day
Did you know: Collectively UW Medicine eliminated nearly 27,000 pounds of medical supplies from landfills last year, saving $2 million—or enough to buy 1,481,481 LED lightbulbs! Check out this UW Medicine infographic that shows how our hospitals are going green from top to bottom.

Dear UW Medical Students:

In response to students’ requests for more information about UWSOM’s accreditation status, we developed a new accreditation website. Throughout 2021, the accreditation website will be updated on a monthly basis to provide an executive summary of each of the twelve accreditation standards and UWSOM’s compliance with those standards. Standard 4 on Faculty Preparation, Productivity, Participation and Policies is now available.

We encourage you to take a look and learn more about accreditation at allopathic schools of medicine.
