Hugs all around at #MatchDay last Friday! These photos were captured moments after medical students opened their letters telling them where they will be training as resident physicians in their specialty for the next 3 to 7 years after medical school. More than 280 University of Washington - School of Medicine medical students matched into residencies in 25 specialties. This year's UW match participants will be scattering to 40 states. Approximately 48 percent matched into primary-care specialties, including family medicine, general internal medicine, medicine/pediatrics, medicine/psychiatry, and general pediatrics. Roughly half choose internal medicine residencies. #WWAMIMatch 🎉 👏 #FlashbackFriday 📷 Ron Wurzer Photography

One week from today, watch students graduating in 2024, in the 75th class receive their degree of Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from the University of Washington. The Physician’s Oath & Hooding Ceremony acknowledges the achievements of our medical students. Through the administration of the Hippocratic Oath or Physician’s Oath, the ceremony reminds the students of the high standards of performance and behavior to which each aspires and with which each is challenged as they enter upon professional careers as physicians. We celebrate a nationwide honor this week for Alaska's Medical School - WWAMI medical student Sarah Rasmussen-Rehkopf. ElevateMeD has named her to their list of 20 #ElevateMeD 2024-25 scholars. You can learn a lot about Rasmussen-Rehkopf through an essay published in First Alaskans magazine. She wrote, "I am Quileute and Makah and grew up in Sitka, in Southeast Alaska. I acknowledge who I am as an Indigenous woman and the story I am bringing with me into medicine: the knowledge passed on to me by my community, growing up in a remote tribal community, coming to medicine after seeing and experiencing interactions that I cannot let happen again. I am determined to be the change and join others to improve the healthcare system." ElevateMeD regularly supports medical students from across the country who will receive a $10,000 scholarship, mentoring, education, and further support from the organization. ElevateMeD has provided more than $1 million in scholarships and support since 2019. Read more about this announcement by visiting elevatemed.org or through another link on our profile page. Congratulations to Sarah for sure, but also to ElevateMeD for recognizing her as someone who will help change health care. You can read her essay here: https://lnkd.in/dTnhhVRZ

Protein design pioneer David Baker was named to the inaugural TIME100 Health list. Baker is a professor of biochemistry at the University of Washington School of Medicine and director of the UW Medicine Institute of Protein Design. The new, annual honor from the news magazine recognizes a hundred global leaders for advancing progress in health, medicine, biomedical sciences and related fields. Proteins are molecular machines and tools that are the workhorses of most biological activities. When Baker became interested in protein engineering, the emphasis in other similar labs at the time was on remodeling existing protein molecules for new purposes. However, according to the magazine's profile, “Baker isn’t interested in tinkering. Rather than modifying the proteins that nature has bestowed on us, Baker designs entirely new ones.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/gJYHesZh

The Magnuson Scholar Program is a key component of the Warren G. Magnuson Institute for Biomedical Research and Health Professions Training. The program is funded by a 1991 endowment established in the late Senator’s name. The annual income allows the University of Washington to distribute an award to one scholar from each of the six health sciences schools – Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health and Social Work – annually. This year's School of Medicine Magnuson Scholar is Justin Lo! Ellen A. Schur, MD, MS Professor, Medicine states, “Justin’s capacity to interpret results, compose a manuscript, and communicate findings is beyond his stage of training. He is at the level of a skilled postdoctoral scholar or above. Justin remains engaged and will continue his research with us by investigating genetic risk factors for hypothalamic gliosis. I believe he will grow into a creative and rigorous physician-investigator.” In pursuit of a career as a physician scientist, Justin is committed to lifelong learning and professional growth. He recognizes that his analytical skillset will be valuable as medicine heads towards an era of big data. Justin’s hope is to complete a fellowship after residency, applying his skills to emerging data-driven topics such as metabolomics and diabetes. Ultimately, Justin strives for evidence-based approaches that can ameliorate the significant burden of diabetes on individuals and communities.
