“I am Quileute and Makah and grew up in Sitka, in Southeast Alaska. I acknowledge who I am as an Indigenous woman and the story I am bringing with me into medicine: the knowledge passed on to me by my community, growing up in a remote tribal community, coming to medicine after seeing and experiencing interactions that I cannot let happen again. I am determined to be the change and join others to improve the healthcare system.”

Lo was named a Magnuson Scholar for 2024-25. Every year, one student from each of the UW health sciences schools is honored as a Magnuson Scholar, a program named for the late Warren G. Magnuson, a longtime UW supporter and former U.S. Senator.
Lo aspires to be an academic physician-scientist who conducts data-driven research focused on risk factors for diabetes and diabetes-related diseases.

You can learn much more about Lo and the entire awards program in the official announcement.
One of his professors wrote, “Justin’s capacity to interpret results, compose a manuscript, and communicate findings is beyond his stage of training. He is at the level of a skilled postdoctoral scholar or above. Justin remains engaged and will continue his research with us by investigating genetic risk factors for hypothalamic gliosis. I believe he will grow into a creative and rigorous physician-investigator.”

ICYMI: SMS text program explores, “Within and Through Error: Exploring the Art of Diagnosis"
Earlier this year, School of Medicine students created art centered on the experience of diagnosis and error. This art now illustrates a free SMS text-based curriculum, and you are invited to participate!
Diagnostic errors impact millions of patients every year. Common healthcare provider responses to medical error include distress, guilt, self-doubt, frustration, and anger. Artmaking (and viewing) can be a powerful way to explore and process these impactful experiences.
To participate in “Within and Through Error: Exploring the Art of Diagnosis," text JOIN to 206-520-8760. The deadline to sign up is May 31.
What you will get: 10 daily weekday texts with images and reflections by UW medical students. Messages are designed to encourage self-reflection, personal recovery, and remind you of proven strategies to decrease error.
