Commemorating Dr. King and his legacy
Most offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a holiday observed by federal and state governments and many businesses. Events will be held throughout WWAMI. In Seattle, the UW Medicine community gathered for a ceremony today, Thursday, Jan. 11, called “Building Bridges: 25 Years of Connection, Community and Love.”
Each of the UW Health Sciences schools honored someone who is serving others. This year, UWSOM honored MS4 Brian Cedeño.

From the nomination letter: “I’ve known Brian since he was an undergraduate at UW and working with his dad in construction. He sought me out because of his interest in Latino health and he wanted to know more about becoming a physician; medical school looked like an unreachable goal," said Leo Morales, M.D., professor of medicine at UWSOM, associate dean for quality improvement in the UW Medicine Office of Healthcare Equity and co-director of the Latino Center for Health.
"Brian knows what it’s like to have limited access to medical care, to struggle financially, and to have uncertainty about the future as an immigrant to this country."

|
Leo Morales, M.D., left, congratulates MS4 Brian Cedeño after he received the community service award today.

|
|
Cedeño has maintained a steadfast commitment to helping his community, be it working at Sea Mar Community Health Center as a health educator, volunteering at community health fairs during medical school or mentoring the next generation of URiM (underrepresented in medicine) students.

Financial Aid updates
The 2024-2025 FAFSA is now available online at www.studentaid.gov. The UW has extended the priority date due to the late opening of the FAFSA to Feb. 28th, 2024. You will need to input your 2022 income information. This will calculate your student aid index (SAI) which can be a negative number and is one of the big changes this year for the FAFSA. The SAI replaces the expected family contribution (EFC).
You will need to provide consent and approval to use the IRS Direct Data Transfer and have the IRS input your Federal Tax information (FTI) into the FAFSA for you for 2022. This process was previously known as the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. We encourage all students to use this transfer to accurately transfer your tax information to the FAFSA.
A big change this year is that independent students are no longer allowed to put parent information on the FAFSA. UWSOM will be collecting this information in a different manner for 2024-2025 scholarship consideration, and we will communicate with you in the coming months regarding that new process.
