A Message from Dr. Suzanne Allen

A new academic year is just a month away! As you may recall, last year we started our academic calendar a month earlier; we’ll be doing the same again this year. Our 2023 entering students will join us in July, and we’re excited to welcome and to get to know them.
May was an exciting month of celebration. We held our Investiture of Doctoral Hoods and the Physician’s Oath Ceremony on the 27th in Seattle’s Benaroya Hall for our 2023 graduating class.

Of the more than 260 UW School of Medicine graduates:
- 54 were elected to the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society.
- 43 were elected to the UW School of Medicine Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society, where they will serve as role models of the human connection in healthcare.
- 85 graduates were involved in Pathways programs to pursue their interests and develop knowledge and skills tailored to working with underserved communities.

As you can see, it’s a privilege for me to be the first person to call each graduate “Doctor,” even as I also work very hard to pronounce names correctly!
He told the students, “There are those that tell you to stay in your lane. Remember that your patients exist outside any lane, and resist the harm that such structures bring. What that will look like, and what that will feel like for you will depend on your journey. Remember not only that you can make a difference, but you must make a difference.”
That’s a powerful call to action for the graduates that many of you taught and mentored: “You MUST make a difference.” I thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students. They were able to walk that stage because of your support throughout their education.
I’m very aware, of course, that many of you are not on any sort of academic calendar. You’re in your community, day in, day out, providing care to people throughout our five WWAMI states. Thank you for what you do for your patients, their families and for what you do for our students. You are appreciated. I hope you have a wonderful summer!

"Financial Transformation" is underway
- In July, the University will begin using new software systems to communicate with and pay vendors - including our clinical educational partners. The ARIBA system for procurement processes will be replaced with a new Workday Supplier Portal.
- During the transition between systems, payments from the University will be paused for what is scheduled to be a brief period before the go-live date in July.

Admissions

Seattle seeks new members for the admissions committee
If you serve on the Committee on Admissions for the Seattle cohort, you'll have a chance to experience the energy of prospective medical school applicants and help shape the future of medicine.
The goal of Admissions is to select a regionally representative and inclusive student body that will go on to serve an increasingly diverse public. We encourage faculty from all backgrounds, especially those who are first generation and/or underrepresented in medicine, to participate.

The Scholarship Social is an evening of inspiration that brings student scholarship recipients, donors and alumni together to celebrate the power of scholarships.
From increasing access to care, to helping address the physician shortage in underserved urban and rural areas, donor generosity is making a difference to future medical leaders like MS3 Wyatt Bowles.
“It’s a privilege to have the help of scholarships," Bowles said. "They’ve made me feel supported and accepted and eased my financial worry. In addition to helping students like me finish medical school, scholarships have the potential to encourage more people, especially from small towns, to realize it’s possible to go to medical school in the first place.”

Learning how lawyers interact with doctors
The relationship between physicians, lawyers and the legal system is a very real thing that might be hard to teach. UWSOM and the UW School of Law cooperated to hold Medicolegal Day, a joint program combining UW Emergency Medicine residents and UW Law students.
The workshop appears to be the first of its kind among residency programs in the nation, according to Nicole M. Chicoine Mooney, M.D., J.D., a Clinical Instructor in the UWSOM Department of Emergency Medicine and an organizer of the event.

UW President shares value of partnerships in Spokane
"Part of what’s exciting about this new facility and this Gonzaga University partnership is that (medical students) are learning state-of-the-art; they’re learning how to do the best possible health care now."
That's some of what UW President Ana Mari Cauce had to say on May 9 (Husky 509 Day in Spokane) as she met with students, faculty and staff as well as news media. President Cauce, fourth from left above, also met with the Spokane County Board of Commissioners, pictured.

Montana student wins nationwide award for physician-scientist research
Christopher “CJ” Johnson, an MS2 in Montana, has won the Physician-Scientist Support Foundation (PSSF) Medical Scholars Research Fellowship (MSRF) award for 2023-2024.
Johnson is one of only five students in the nation selected to receive a one-year fellowship award that will support him for a full year of laboratory research starting in Summer 2023.
Johnson can thus continue his research with the Simpson Lab, led by Cory Simpson, M.D., Ph.D., Principal Investigator and Assistant Professor in the UW Division of Dermatology. Johnson and the Simpson Lab study the cellular processes that create and maintain skin.
