Celebrating Native American Heritage Month
This month, the nation celebrates the diverse cultures, traditions,historiesand contributions ofAmerican IndianandAlaska Nativepeoples in the United States.

UW Medicine hospitals hosted flag-raising events on Nov. 1, including at UW Medical Center campuses at Northwest, top, and Montlake. You can read a message from UW Medicine leadership here.

Commemorating Veterans Day this Monday, Nov. 11, 2024


Veterans Day, on Monday, Nov. 11, is a federal holiday that honors the service of all veterans of the United States Armed Forces past and present. We are extremely grateful to all of our UWSoM students, faculty, and staff and alumni who have served our nation with courage and selflessness. You can learn more about Veterans Day and an observance at the UW Seattlew campus at this link.  
 

Supporting Yourself and Others During Election Week 

We want to remind you of ideas that the leadership team and counselors shared last week about addressing the potential stress of Election Week, regardless of the outcome.
  • Remain committed to health habits such as eating well-balanced foods, limiting alcohol consumption, exercising, etc. 
  • Stay connected with your community. Hope and support thrive within a connected community. 
  • Set boundaries with intention around exposure to social media, news, Reddit (and other online community bulletin boards), and discussing subjects that compromise your mental well-being. 
  • Acknowledge your experience of emotions as being a natural reaction to this type of event. How you respond is unique to you and is not something pathological. 
  • Be open to asking for support from professional resources such as counselors and other mental health care providers.

Many thanks to everyone who took the ISA Survey

Here is a message from ISA Committee Co-Leads Nicholas Popp (MS4), Sarah Busch (MS4), Ben Henderson (MS3), Matt Lumsden (MS2) and Lila Faulhaber (MS2):

You did it! You helped set an unprecedented level of participation in the Independent Student Analysis (ISA) survey across cohorts and campuses. On behalf of the entire ISA team, we thank you so much for taking the time to complete the survey.  
Here are the cohort-level rates compared with the 2016 ISA survey response rates:
  • MS1:  97% (2016=88%)
  • MS2:  89% (2016=86%)
  • MS3:  86% (2016=74%)
  • MS4:  83% (2016=74%)
This outstanding outcome is thanks to you taking the survey in and out of class, during your busy clerkship rotations, and while working on your residency applications.

The next step is for our committee to generate the final report, which is a required component for the medical school accreditation. Concurrently, the medical school administration will use your survey data to address key areas of your concerns. The administration will be sharing with you the priority continuous quality improvement interventions for your ongoing input.

Information for Seattle-based students:

New processes, policies, training and more offered in response to antisemitism and Islamophobia task force reports

The University of Washington on Monday announced several improvements and new practices to address concerns of antisemitism and Islamophobia that were raised in a recent climate assessment and associated task force reports. UW President Ana Mari Cauce and Provost Tricia Serio on Monday responded to the co-chairs of the task forces with an outline of steps they are committing to take, including the creation of a Title VI Coordinator role, a consolidated Civil Rights Compliance Office and new policies to consistently track bias incidents.

Student group updates

RSO Registration Extended: The deadline has been extended, so you can now register a Registered Student Organization (RSO) until Nov. 21. Groups must register every year. Please register your group for the 2024-25 academic year to retain access to RSO resources!

Funding Open for 2024-25 Events: The UW Student Activities Office offers grants to support events for room rental, food, etc. Get more information on their website here.  

There is also a Student Diversity Event Fund (SDEF). You can get more information about it here.
